Golden Reverie: Tagore - A Minimalist portraiture with a modern decorative elegance.
Acrylic on canvas
This piece is a part of the collection that I was commissioned in 2011 for the 150th birth anniversary celebration of Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel laureate, poet, writer, musician, and philosopher who profoundly impacted Bengali and world literature. To honor is legacy, the celebrations focused on his universalism, his establishment of Visva-Bharati University, and his inspiring vision for humanity.
Title: Golden Reverie: Tagore
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Dimensions: 24 x 72 inches
This monumental portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, rendered in flowing golden strokes against a deep black ground, celebrates the poet, philosopher, and Nobel laureate whose legacy continues to inspire across generations. The elongated format amplifies the sense of grandeur, while the minimalist linework distills his likeness into a timeless, iconic presence. The gold symbolizes wisdom and enlightenment, qualities that Tagore embodied through his art, music, and words.
With bold simplicity, this portrait emerges through sweeping golden strokes against a stark black ground. The refined lines convey depth and character while maintaining an abstract, symbolic quality. Monumental in scale, the work balances minimalism with grandeur — a study in contrasts between light and shadow, presence and absence.
Style & Symbolism
Style: Minimalist portraiture with a modern decorative elegance.
Symbolism: Gold conveys knowledge, divinity, and immortality; the black ground frames him as both timeless and eternal.
Impact: The vertical sweep and monumental size make this an anchoring piece for galleries, cultural spaces, or private collections.
